Jazzorchester Vorarlberg

2009

The Jazzorchester Vorarlberg was founded in 2005 by Martin Eberle and Martin Franz. In the interceding 20 years, it has become one of the most versatile and interesting large jazz ensembles in Mitteleuropa. Its history of collaborations with national and international featured artists and innovative, often multidisciplinary concert programs from the ranks of the band have given it a reputation for quality, fearlessness, and originality.

My own history with the Jazzorchester started around 2009, when Martin Eberle asked me to compose a program for the ensemble with the bass clarinetist Ulrich Drechsler as featured soloist. That program grew into the band's debut CD, Introducing the Jazzorchester Vorarlberg. I arranged music for a number of other featured artists and a few years later, my ongoing membership in Fatima Spar's band led to one of the great collaborations in the band's history, and the second album I collaborated on: The Voice Within. Still proud of that one.

More recently, I worked with the author Carolyn Amann on a piece called "Petit Mal", which I (even more recently) adapted into a concert program called "Scenes From A Play". My most recent work for the ensemble was "Egypt Road" (these latter two are filed on this homepage under "compositions").

In short: undoubtedly the most fruitful and longest-running association of my career. It's been, and continues to be, a pleasure.
